What does it mean to abstract cases in medical terms?

Question: In a job description they lay out that one of the duties would be to abstract cases...what does it mean?

Answer: Before you abstract a case you are given a list of different things you need to find out from that medical record. (date of diagnosis, dr's name, treatment(s) the patient received, etc) Abstracting a case is reviewing a medical record and finding the items that need to be found and entering that information on an abstract sheet.
