Answer: I think it was a response to the literalness of modern art. The Abstract Expressionists wanted "pure art", and any recognizable object or form within a painting was not "pure" because your previous experience with this object meant that you were not objective, you were not viewing the art work with fresh eyes. Read "The Painted Word" by Tom Wolfe. I'm basically lifting all this from him.
