I visited a college gallery the other day..and saw unique WAX media?

Question: It was wax over charcoaled/pencilled drawing. It was unusual with the mix of media and I've noticed some woodwork mixed with painting. These were huge paintings about 6 feet squared. I didn't find it particularly aesthetic, but it was unique and probably took a lot of work. QUESTION----Is this mixing of media and usual unusual media a contemporary trend?

Answer: Wax has been used in art since at least c. 100CE, usually with pigment added. It's called "encaustic painting." So putting wax, with or without pigment, is not so revolutionary. Mixed media was a trend in the 20th century, beginning with Picasso and Braque in 1912; perhaps Rauschenberg's mixed-media assemblages are most famous of our own time. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Encaustic
